The Durham University Development Abroad Society has been set up to give students the opportunity to fundraise for an annual development project. These projects are designed to improve the lives of those living in the developing world, and will necessarily be small scale and specific. Ideally, each project will span just one academic year, allowing members to see it through from the planning stage to its implementation.
The first project, run in the academic year 2008-9 is called Sunshine Project. Money raised this year will go towards providing a medical centre in Togo, West Africa with solar powered electricity. The current lack of electricity causes major problems; women have to give birth by candlelight and there is no emergency care available.
Members will have the chance to fundraise, plan, organize and implement the projects as well as meet like-minded people and hopefully travel to see the project in place.
