Societies Finances

All ratified societies are entitled to a society bank account run through the DSU. We are constantly seeking to improve the current system so by all means email any feedback to [email protected]!

On this page you will find all the forms for applying for everything you will need accounts-wise for your society as well as the financial regulations that all societies must sign up to before creating a society account.

If you are a new society you will want to set up an account as soon as possible. To do this you need to see Maureen Whitfield ([email protected]), DSU Membership Services Administrator, as soon as possible with the society President, Secretary and Treasurer; be sure to bring your campus cards.

Society Finance Forms

In the Excel files below you will find all the forms required to fill in to work with the DSU finances, from requesting cheques, raising invoices, paying in cheques etc.  If you wish to print them out and hand them in hard copy then that would be fine.

If you wish to email them across to DSU please ensure that it gets emailed across to Maureen Whitfield ([email protected]) from the email account of one of the society signatories or indeed the society's own ITS account.

DSU Grants Committee

DSU has a £15,000 budget each year to give away to societies. Societies are invited to make claims to apply for this money once each term and explain why they deserve a slice of this money. With well over 100 societies applying for this money your bid has to be realistic, achievable and fit the aims and objectives of Durham Students’ Union as a charitable organisation.  It would be highly unlikely for any society to be awarded more than £300 of money in an academic year.

The deadlines for applications to Grants Committee this year are:
Monday 15th November
Monday 28th February
Monday 23rd May

What happens then is that a pre-meeting will take place between the committee to analyse each bid, and then the Societies and Student Development Officer will ask questions of each society about the bids they have submitted. Replies to this will be needed in the next few days before Grants Committee meet again to decide where to distribute the money.

If you have any questions, look at page 14 of the DSU Societies Handbook or, if that doesn’t help, email the Societies and Student Development Officer at
[email protected].

Finance Office Opening Times

Monday 11:00 - 16:30
Tuesday 10:00 - 17:00
Wednesday 10:00 - 17:00
Thursday 11:00 - 16:30
Friday 11:00 - 16:30

The Finance Office may be open outside these times, but it will be guaranteed to be open at the times above.  The reason the office closes is that the finance staff need to count up money, and this must be done in a secure location.
