Referendum

A referendum is the highest policy making body of Durham Students' Union.  A referendum is conducted by the means of an online vote in which all students are entitled to vote.

The big issues that students want to debate will be voted upon by a referendum.  For example, in Epiphany Term an online vote was to determine whether or not DSU should affiliate to the NUS (National Union of Students).

A referendum can be called by the following people:

  • A simple majority of the Trustee Board
  • A 2/3rds majority of DSU Council
  • A simple majority of members present and voting in a General Meeting (if quoracy is at least 3% of membership)
  • Any member via a secure petition signed by 3% of the membership.

If you wish to call a referendum on any issue then contact DSU Democracy Committee ([email protected]) who will advise on what action needs to be taken.
